Dental Implants

Dental implants are a very reliable source for effective tooth replacement. Whether you have lost one tooth or many, implants can provide a permanent solution that looks and functions normally.

Dental Implants at Dentist of Siouxland

A dental implant is an artificial root upon which a manufactured tooth can be placed. Implants are used to support the replacement of a single tooth, multiple teeth, or larger prostheses such as dentures. Placement of an implant stabilizes bone levels and may prevent bone loss, resulting in greater long-term support, function, and improved esthetics. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

We offer dental implants at each of our locations—both locations in Sioux City, IA (Lakeport St. and Hamilton St.), and our location in Elk Point, SD. Schedule your appointment online using the link below or visit our contact page for information on the location nearest you.

Types of Implant Supported Restorative Dentistry

Snap-on dentures and removable bridges

Implant-supported dentures which can be taken in and out of the mouth are often called snap-on dentures. Because implant-supported dentures are anchored into place they don’t require traditional adhesives and cannot slip out of place. One reason patients request snap-on dentures or removable bridges over fixed alternatives is easy cleaning.

All-on-4 implants, permanent bridges, and fixed dentures

Bridge implants and fixed dentures are both more extensive and permanent options compared to other implant methods. These will replace multiple teeth in a row and be anchored in by one or more dental implants.

All-on-4 implants are effectively full, permanent, and non-removable dentures that are anchored in by two sets of implants on the top and bottom of the mouth. They require significant planning but can offer a completely permanent new set of teeth that function in nearly the same way as natural teeth.

Dental Implant Process

  1. Consultation & Exam. Before deciding if dental implants are the right restoration method for you we will conduct a full exam, including a CBCT scan, and discuss your treatment options.
  2. Tooth Extraction & Bone Grafting. If any teeth need extraction that will be scheduled once a treatment plan has been established. This will also include a recovery time to ensure the site is ready for implantation. Any bone grafting required to support the implant will then take place which will require at least a few months to heal.
  3. Implant placement. After the site is prepared the implantation can take place. The implant will be placed into the jawbone and a healing cap will be placed over the implant. This is followed by regular check-ups to ensure proper healing.
  4. Implant healing. After your implant is placed, osseointegration begins. During this, your jawbone heals around the dental implant providing a solid base for your new artificial tooth. This process takes approximately 3 months.
  5. Abutment & Crown Placement. Once healing is complete the abutment, or connecting piece, and full-contour zirconia crown can be placed.

FAQ

  • Are dental implants painful?

The most difficult part of an implantation procedure is extracting any teeth that implanted crowns will replace. However, any extraction will include anesthesia meaning little to no pain during the procedure and only a few days of recovery.

Implant procedures also use local anesthesia and so entail mild to no pain during the procedure. Any pain in the days after the implant procedure should be manageable using over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen.

  • After the procedure are there any special instructions?

After implantation, or extraction and grafting if required, you may experience typical discomforts associated with any oral surgery. These can include swelling, pain at the site, and minor bleeding. Below are some recommendations to follow for 2 weeks after to ensure proper healing and recovery.

Pain Management. Ibuprofen reduces pain and swelling and is highly recommended after surgery.

Oral Hygiene. Gentle brushing is important to keep the recovering area clean and to avoid irritation from overly aggressive brushing. Warm salt water rinses can also help keep the area clean and reduce pain and swelling.

Minor Bleeding. After oral surgeries, it’s common to have a small amount of blood in your saliva for a day or two. Gently biting on a gauze pad for 30 minutes can help with this. If bleeding continues for more than a few days, contact our office.

Swelling. Besides ibuprofen and saltwater rinses, periodically using an ice pack on the cheek near the affected area can help.

  • What is a dental implant?

Individual or isolated teeth replaced by an implant-covered crown are made up of three pieces. A titanium metal rod, akin to a screw, that is placed inside the jawbone. This rod then has a connecting piece, an abutment, placed on top of it. The abutment is what attaches the implant to the crown. This is fundamentally how all other types of dental implants function just with added pieces for more extensive restorations.

Implants are used instead of crowns alone when no tooth is present or when the underlying tooth is decayed or has extensive root damage making it a poor base for a crown alone. Implants also have less issues with healing and last longer compared to crowns.

  • What are the benefits of dental implants?

A person suffering from tooth loss will experience many challenges. The most obvious of these challenges are difficulties when chewing and speaking clearly. When tooth loss is left untreated it can result in very serious problems like tooth shifts, jawbone deterioration, facial structure loss and bite imbalances. These issues usually develop over time when there is no root system to maintain bone health and alignment. Dental implants provide an artificial root system to maintain order and keep the remaining teeth in line.

They can not only help a patient overcome short-term challenges; they can also prevent long-term problems linked to tooth loss. They are the most effective method for treating tooth loss because dental implants serve as an artificial root system for supporting a prosthetic tooth and allow replacement teeth to feel more natural.
