The presence of certain bacteria in your mouth may cause cavities

Dental cavities begin to develop when bacteria build up on plaque – a sticky film found on the surface of a tooth. The bacteria feed on sugars and carbohydrates from the foods and beverages you consume, producing acids that dissolve the protective layer of tooth enamel. This makes it easier for bacteria to penetrate and infect the tooth, thus causing the cavity.

Substandard oral hygiene practices may cause cavities

You may brush your teeth twice daily and floss once a day, but are you doing them properly? This means brushing at least two minutes and going through the correct motions of flossing. It is also best to brush 30 minutes after eating and drinking to avoid damaging your teeth enamel.

 

Other factors that may cause cavities 

Frequent vomiting and Gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GERD can also create highly acidic conditions in the mouth that will make your teeth more prone to cavities. Certain dental appliances, including retainers and night guards, can also restrict saliva flow over teeth which can lead to plaque formation and the onset of cavities.
